First steps to consider

  • If you have pain in the groin or hip when you put weight on your leg, or pain when lifting your leg, you should see a healthcare provider to check if you have a stress fracture in your femur (thigh) bone.
  • Your provider may order an MRI to confirm you have a femoral stress fracture.

Symptom relief

  • It’s important to give the fracture time to heal by keeping weight off your leg and using crutches.
  • Taking OTC ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help the pain.
  • Alternate using heat and ice packs for the pain and inflammation.
